City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department

2020 August Storm Clean-up

August 11th - 22nd, 2020
Various Locations throughout the Metro

Storms ripped through Iowa last week and heavily impacted the City of Des Moines, including our parks, trails, cemeteries, and other public spaces. Safety of our citizens and staff is a top priority, but if you have the ability to help and can safely follow our guidelines, we'd love some extra sets of hands to clear debris. Every bit helps!

To get started, choose a park (times are flexible as work is independent), sign-up, read the safety sheet and send in your volunteer waiver to If you have any questions, feel free to email us at or call us (515)505-2231.

Safety: Details are included in the job description but safety is our top priority. If you feel unsafe at any time, please do not proceed with volunteer work. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings at all times. Due to storm damage, there may be unforeseen elements such as hanging or downed trees and/or power lines.

Due to COVID-19, volunteers are asked to follow all CDC and public health guidelines and work as individuals or only with members of the same household. Please make sure to socially distance six feet or more at all times and wear a mask in public if you are unable too. If you have borrowed any shared items, please make sure to thoroughly wash and/or disinfect your hands before and after use.

BONUS THANK YOU...Thanks to Exile Brewing Company each adult volunteer helping us will receive one free beer. Information on how to receive your thank you gift is included in your confirmation. Offer good through August 23.
