The Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden has been a favorite spot for gardeners, strollers, and wedding parties since the 1930s. We need volunteers to help us maintain this "All American Rose Selection Public Display Garden," one of 132 such gardens in the United States. You can find the Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden nestled among the grand old trees of Greenwood Park at 4800 Grand Avenue, directly behind the Des Moines Art Center.
To keep our roses healthy and blooming, we need your help to “dead head” the plants. The term “deadheading” refers to the act of removing flowers from a plant. In most instances, these are blooms that have started to age and are no longer considered attractive. Deadheading can help the plant focus energy on producing new buds and flowers, prevent disease and pests, and improve the aesthetic appeal of the plant.
Volunteers must be 14+. Minors must have parent/legal guardian approval.
We are looking for volunteers to assist on Thursdays from 9-11 AM this summer. Please choose your desired shift(s) below.
HAVE A GROUP? If you want to volunteer as a group, please email us at ParksVolunteer@dmgov.org. We keep Tuesday mornings open for groups of 8 to volunteer together. After coordinating with Parks and Recreation staff, we will send you a password-protected group sign-up link so each individual can sign the online waiver/registration form. Each person will receive their own confirmation email.
